A rubber floor is often used in gyms, playgrounds, (roof) terraces, and garages. Cleaning a rubber floor is relatively simple, as long as you follow a few basic guidelines. Below, we share practical tips for keeping your rubber floor looking good and clean.

Use the right cleaning products

In most cases, warm water is sufficient for cleaning. For stains or dirt, you can add a mild cleaning agent or gentle soap (pH-neutral) to the water. For stubborn stains, adding a splash of white vinegar to the water can help.

Steps for cleaning a rubber floor:

Step 1: Vacuum

Remove loose dirt with a soft broom or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment. Regular sweeping prevents dirt from accumulating and penetrating the pores of the rubber.

Step 2: Remove stains

Remove stains immediately to prevent them from soaking into the floor. Use a damp cloth or soft sponge with a mild detergent. For tougher stains, white vinegar can be applied.

Step 3: Mop the floor

Mix a mild (pH-neutral) cleaning agent with water in a bucket, following the recommended ratio on the label. Dip a soft scrubbing brush or mop into the solution and gently scrub the surface of the rubber tiles to loosen dirt and stains. Wipe the tiles with clean water to thoroughly remove all dirt and any soap residue. Avoid aggressive scrubbing or using (coarse) scrub machines, as they can damage the rubber surface.

Step 4: Allow the floor to air dry

After mopping, allow the floor to dry naturally. Opening windows and doors can help speed up the drying process.

Additional tips for keeping a rubber floor clean:

  • Place entrance mats to reduce the amount of dirt brought inside.

  • Avoid contact with oil, gasoline, or acids, as these can damage the surface.

  • Do not use acidic cleaners such as bleach, dishwashing liquid, or solvents like turpentine, as they can cause staining.

  • Vacuum regularly and remove stains promptly.

  • Avoid excessive mopping. Use clean water and wring out the mop well to prevent too much moisture on the floor.
